Description

Players learn the fundamentals of dribbling, passing, shooting and defense. We will also focus on offensive and defensive strategies as well as specific position development.
Classes include games and scrimmages incorporating skills learned.

Class 1
5 minutes:
• Introduction/Attendance
10 minutes:
• Dynamic Warm ups: Light jog, high knees, bottom kicks, and sprint.
• Static Stretches
10 minutes:
Learn speed dribble, control dribble, crossover
*The players will learn the difference between three fundamental dribbles, speed/control/crossover. The speed dribble is used for fast breaks, and getting from point A to point B on the court, whereas control is used when defenders are guarding. The crossover teaches players to dribble well with both hands equally to minimize steals.
Drills:
• Dribble around cone and hand off to partner
• Dribble and shoot a basket
*Partner drills facilitate friendships and learning that basketball is a team sport. 15 minutes: Games
• Dribble Tag, Dribble Knockout, Lines
*Dribble Tag: One player begins as the “tagger”, and as he/she tags other players, they must freeze. The frozen students are freed by their teammates using a basketball.
*Dribble Knockout: All players face off against each other, attempting to steal other players’ balls without contact. If a player’s ball rolls outside of a boundary line established by the coach, that player is out, until one player remains. This game utilizes the control dribble.
*The coaches explain all of the usages of the different lines on the court and their names. The coach will then call out a line, and players must run to the correct line in time.
10 minutes:
• Scrimmage - Steal the Bacon Style
*Players are lined up across from each other with corresponding numbers. When specific numbers are called, those players will face off in a controlled scrimmage where the coach is allowed teaching points along with maximizing repetitions for everyone involved.
- 5 minutes allotted for bathroom/water breaks

Class 2
10 minutes:
• Attendance / Goals
• Dynamic Warm ups: add crab walks, bear crawl
• Static Stretches
15 minutes:
- Review dribbling from class 1
*Many classes will begin by giving students a refresher of what was learned in prior classes to be able to progress to new skills, while practicing skills learned.
Drills:
• Dribbling: add hesitation, stutter step.
- Combination: hesitation/stutter step/crossover
• Passing: bounce pass and chest pass
*The hesitation and stutter step are offensive moves used in an attempt to have the defensive player get off balance, enabling an advantage for the offensive player to dribble by them.
*Players also will learn two of the basic fundamental passes which encourages teamwork. Bounce passes use one bounce, whereas a chest pass does not hit the ground. Players are taught to correctly throw accurate and safe passes.
15 minutes:
• Game – Dribble Tag
• Game - Rainbow Tag
• Contest – Passing
*Rainbow tag is a variation of sharks and minnows. The coach will call out a color, and if students are wearing any of the specific colors on their clothes, they will attempt to run to the other side without being tagged.
*For the passing contest, players are lined up with partners. After each whistle blown by the coach, the players must either throw a bounce or chest pass to their partners. If passes are incorrectly thrown, that team is out and helps the coach judge the game.
10 minutes:
• Scrimmage - Steal the Bacon Style
- 5 minutes allotted for bathroom/water breaks

Class 3
10 minutes:
• Attendance / Goals
• Dynamic Warm ups: add carioca, leap frogs

15 minutes:
- Learn triple threat position
*The triple threat position is used before a player engages in a dribble. They secure the ball and have options on whether to dribble, pass, or shoot.
Review dribbling from class 1 and 2
Drills:
• Dribbling: add in/out, spin move
- Combination: hesitation/stutter step/crossover, or spin move at lines
• Catch ball into triple threat, proceed to dribble
*The in/out and spin move are advance, but fun dribble moves to trick the defenders or enable the offensive player to effective pass a defender dependent on body position.
5 minutes:
• Game – Dribble Knockout
10 minutes:
• Scrimmage - Steal the Bacon Style
10 minutes:
• Relays: dribble to lines and back
*Teams are created by the coaches, and players are instructed to dribble to specific lines on the court and back to their teammates: foul shot, half court, and baseline.
- 5 minutes allotted for bathroom/water breaks

Class 4
10 minutes:
• Attendance / Goals
• Dynamic Warm ups: add jumping jacks
• Static Stretches
15 minutes:
- Learn jump stop and pivot
- Review triple threat
- Review passing from class 2: add fake pass, overhead pass
Drills:
• On the whistle: speed dribble, jump stop, pivot, fake pass
• Passing: Get the ball to one side of the court to the other without the ball touching the ground. Start with 20 seconds, and reduce each round.
*The jump stop and pivot are effective moves to prevent turnovers by way of the “traveling” rule. If a player takes 3 steps without dribbling, a “travel” is called and turns the ball over.
*The fake pass is a fun move for the player to trick the defense into looking or moving in a certain direction. The players to use on offense offensive player will pass or dribble to the opposite side.
15 minutes:
• Scrimmage – add steals
*In prior classes, stealing is not allowed to prevent injuries to players. Only after have they learned proper defense and protecting the ball on offense, is stealing allowed.
10 minutes:
• Relays: dribble to baseline, jump stop and pivot, dribble back – jump stop and pass to partner
• Passing Circle - add fake pass
*The passing circle is a variation of flinch using passing rules. The players must catch the ball in the first round. If they drop the ball, they are eliminated and become judges. Rounds two and three add rules such as hand claps and flinches.
- 5 minutes allotted for bathroom/water breaks

Class 5
10 minutes:
• Attendance / Goals
• Dynamic Warm ups: add skip and reach
• Static Stretches
15 minutes:
- Learn Defense: stance, fast feet, shuffle, block, box out, charge, loose ball
*Basic fundamentals of defense: Players must have a strong wide base, usually shoulder width apart. From here, quick agility and footwork is taught to allow for effective shifting in reaction to the offensive players. Players are taught to block, without making contact with offensive players.
- Learn Rebound: catch the ball, above the head, triple threat
*A rebound is a regaining possession of the basketball after a shot. Players will learn to look and chase after a ball after shot is taken by either their teammates, or the opposite team.
10 minutes:
• Defense Competition
*Defense Competition: The coach will explain a set of defensive rules to follow, similar to simon says. Players are eliminated and help the coach judge the game until one player remains.
15 Minutes:
• Scrimmage – call defensive fouls
*Contact with other players are officially not allowed and result in turnovers now that players have learned more about the game. Teaching points of correct defensive technique are emphasized.
- 5 minutes allotted for bathroom/water breaks

Class 6
10 minutes:
• Attendance / Goals
• Dynamic Warm ups: add defensive stance
• Static Stretches
15 minutes:
- Learn Shooting: balance, eyes, elbow, and follow through
*Players will learn to shoot correctly with fun analogies through pizza and volcano eruptions, similar to the dinosaur elbows learned for securing the basketball. They must line their feet correctly to the basket, hold the ball like a pizza or plate of food, and burst up with the power of a volcano burst.
Drill:
• 3 Shots: one hand, guide hand, both hands
*Players will learn to systematically shoot the ball first by using one hand to control the ball, adding a guide hand to aim the ball, and bring the ball up with both hands before shooting with one.
10 minutes:
Games:
• Shooting Competition: 3 shots made at each basket
*Teams are separated to different baskets on the court. They must make 3 shots at their basket before proceeding to the next. The first team to make 3 shots in every basket wins.
• Relays: first team to ten points
*The teams now square off by dribbling to hoop and the first team to make ten points wins. 15 Minutes:
• Scrimmage – add free throws
The coaches will now enforce shooting fouls caused by the defense, and awards the offense with free shots. The defense will be placed in proper positions for this rule in the game.
- 5 minutes allotted for bathroom/water breaks

Class 7
10 minutes:
• Attendance / Goals
• Dynamic Warm ups
• Static Stretches
10 minutes:
- Review jump stop
- Learn Layups: two steps, jump off of opposite foot, shoot off of the square
*Layups are taught to be the easiest shot on the court, however the technique takes practice. Players are taught to dribble, take two steps, bring the ball up and shoot the basketball at a correct angle.
Drill:
• Layup lines
*Layup lines is one of the most commonly used team warm ups prior to games. Players are lined up across from each other, with one team shooting a layup and corresponding players rebound from the other side.
15 minutes:
Games:
• Relays: first team to ten points with layups
• Hot Seat
*Hot Seat: A shooting elimination game where players use their shooting techniques to take jump shots. If the player scores, they continue to the back of the line. If they next player misses, they are in the “hot seat” where they can be eliminated if the player after makes a shot.
15 Minutes:
• Scrimmage – give 15 second clock
*Regulation games involve a shot clock. Here players are given a 15 second time to shoot a basketball. The short time encourages the players to make decisive decisions on the court, and pass the ball to their teammates.
